FAQs

1. What will decisions be based on for admission to this program?

Although a BA, BFA or an MFA is not required to be a participant in this program, it is encouraged. Self-taught artists are welcome and encouraged to apply as well as artists who studied other subjects in school. What is most important for us to see is developed and considered work in the artists portfolio and a sincere and committed interest in this year-long program. Artists that are ready to work in response to assignments and projects is optimal. Being open to feedback and being able to also offer genuine feedback to peers is a huge part of this intimate experience.

2. What do I need to apply?

Artists can apply with an updated website or a PDF of 15-20 images of work for review. On the application form you will also be asked to write a brief statement of intent.

Please note, Instagram is not a tool for us to review artists' work.

3. What if I don't live in NYC?

That is fine! The Canopy Program is virtual and all meetings will be conducted via Zoom. Class meetings will be recorded.

The final group show at the end of the year will take place in New York. All artists will be responsible for shipping their work to + from NYC.

4. What if I miss a meeting?

This happens occasionally and we understand, meeting notes and recordings will be offered for all artists in the program. We highly encourage consistent attendance on all class meetings and that commitment is an important part of the acceptance and participation of the program.

5. If sales occur at the final group pop-up show - what is the commission the artist receives?

85% to artists. 15% to NYC Crit Club's Scholarship fund.

5. Will I get small group feedback?

Yes, all artists will have the opportunity for small group meetings of 5 members for more focused feedback. Feedback will be made available with faculty as well as peer meetings to review work and ideas.
