Material Abstraction (Tuesdays)

This is a project based painting intensive. You will be given specific prompts which will lead you to generate work that is yours. Prompts encourage visual and personal research in preparation for making. Technical exploration, perception, development of ideas, intuition, invention, representation and communication are at the core of this class.

The Demonic Body- Othering and Ecstasy: Tuesdays

In manuscripts and narratives recording Saints Lives we find non-local characters frequently described as satanic devil worshipers. In Mappa Mundi “others” are described as demonic or monstrous, pushed physically to the margins of geography. In chronicles and histories, we find descriptions of genetic mutants and reoccurring binaries of blackness and whiteness…

This course is an opportunity to extend yourself beyond the studio to explore curation as creative practice. Classes are centered on the history and practice of the Artist as Curator. In addition to readings and guest speakers on the topic, classwork will include exercises in organizing and displaying artwork, conceptualizing ideas verbally and in writing, documentation of art and using media to promote within and beyond your own community.

Art Career Intensive with Alex Paik (Wednesdays)

Art Career Intensive is the perfect course for artists who want to realize their professional aspirations. Artists share professional material of their choosing online on Zoom for feedback. Using photos of each artist’s artwork and goals as the starting point, artists receive feedback on application materials, websites, speaking, writing and/or about their work.

The class offers each artist the opportunity to present their work for a long critique at 25 minutes for feedback, context and research based prompts. All artists will be paired with a partner in class for out of class studio visits and will receive written and verbal feedback in all presentations of their work.

Manipulating textile is a global tradition that extends beyond the decorative. The intersection where textile and image come together represents our personal, private worlds and universal ideals and values. Participants will learn techniques in printing design and image on textile to consider their own relationship with painting, form, and pattern.
