Description

The History and Theory of Drawing is a seminar / art history course which focuses on Drawing beginning the 15th century to the present day. The course aims to better understand drawing continuous relevance, it’s historial use and its connection to language and function.

Major topics within drawing will be discussed in presentations based off of select readings and films. Artists will be introduced to major figures in the history of Western & Non-Western Art and investigate the nature of period and individual  styles. Additionally the use of various media and techniques used by these artists. Readings and class discussions are designed to broaden critical perspectives and to enable students to learn how to articulate their understanding of drawing as a medium and form of artistic expression.

Students will begin the course by exploring the question about artistic preferences for materials and techniques and what these media are like. The selection of reading materials addresses issues relating to the formal characteristics of period and individual styles within drawing.

Students will read primary sources written by critics and artists and current art historical studies and criticism.

Classes are enhanced through peer led discussions and visits from artists & critics.
