About This Course

This 7 week course led by artist Alexandra Rubinstein takes you inside New York City galleries and the larger art world with focused gallery tours, studio visits with artists, and conversations with gallerists. You will learn from artists with rare access to the private studios with the opportunity to to discuss their process, research and studio habits. This course provides a closer look into exhibitions, curation, galleries, and artists studios - aiming to open up conversations and offer transparency to art world issues and topics not often discussed in traditional classrooms. Gallery Walks & Studio Talks will be an exciting seven weeks and an opportunity to meet new people, see new galleries and shows and take a closer look into the artist’s studio of six New York artists.

Artists Will:

  • Visit the studio of faculty Alexandra Rubinstein for discussion on her work and Q&A about her process, research and studio habits.
  • Visit 6-8 exhibitions in New York City with Alexandra Rubinstein and class to broaden perspective, see traditional galleries as well as artist run spaces. Select exhibitions will offer a glimpse into the most exciting fall shows on view and walkthroughs as a group.
  • Visit the studio of select artists for discussion on their work and Q&A about their process, research and studio habits.
  • Meet new peers in New York City and build relationships in the art community. This is a great course for those living in the Tri-State area looking to build community!
  • Have the opportunity to ask questions in the studio with select special guest artists chosen by Faculty Alexandra Rubinstein.

Mentor Bio

Alexandra Rubinstein is a conceptual artist working in painting, drawing and mixed media. She immigrated to the U.S. from Russia in 1997, earned her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2010, and has been based in New York since. Inspired by immigrating during adolescence and ongoing challenges of navigating the world, she focuses on the intersection of culture, gender, and power. By combining mundane and familiar images with the explicit, she creates a new narrative, challenging societal norms. Alexandra has exhibited at the Mother Gallery (New York, NY), The Hole (New York, NY, Kravets Wehby Gallery (New York, NY), Dimin Gallery (New York, NY), Swivel Gallery (New York, NY), Mrs. Gallery (New York, NY), Cob Gallery (London, UK), GUTS Gallery, (London, UK), Sotheby’s (Los Angeles,CA), Untitled Art Fair (Miami, FL), NADA (New York, NY), Spring Break Art Fair (New York, NY), Future Fair (New York, NY) and others. Her work has been featured in Juxtapoz, Hyperallergic, New American Paintings, Forbes, Huffington Post, Cosmopolitan, GQ, Playboy, Broad City, Desus and Nero, and Real Time with Bill Maher. She has attended the Plop residency (London, UK) and has been a recipient of the MyMA grant.
