Art Career Intensive: Application Focused

Art Career Intensive is the perfect course for artists who want to realize their professional aspirations, focusing on artists’ applications to residency programs, exhibition opportunities, open calls, MFA programs, grants, etc. Artists share professional materials of their choosing online via Zoom for feedback. Using photos of each artists’ artwork and goals as the starting point, artists receive feedback on application materials, websites, speaking, writing and/or about their work. Everyone in this class will receive at least 2 critiques of application materials or work of their choosing.

The course begins with a discussion from Will Hutnick about what panelists look for in applications, and subsequent classes will have a guest speaker sharing their expertise in the field. Guest speakers for this course are Carolyn Sickles, Artist and Executive Director of Tulsa Artist Fellowship; Pennylane Shen, Artist Consultant, Curator and Educator: Owner of Dazed and Confucius, Gabriel de Guzman, Director of Arts & Chief Curator at Wave Hill; and James Williams II, Artist and Curator.

Artists will gain focus on their larger aspirations such as acceptance to residency programs, MFA programs, open calls, grants, shows or curatorial proposals, and/or improving their artwork. This course will focus on creating your own opportunities, working with/creating alternative spaces, and re-defining definitions of success.

Artists in this course will:

  • Meet for 6 weekly, 2 hour classes online via Zoom

  • Insider talks on professional practices for artists, with a longer panel discussion led by the instructors on the first day.

  • Talks and Q+A on professional practices with an emphasis on application processes

  • Participants will get feedback on application materials for residencies, MFA applications or other opportunities! Artists present work and/or application materials of their choosing

  • Receive helpful feedback and insight on application image selection, image order, artist statements, websites, art related job applications, MFA application content and/or art application writing
