Jan 4 - 6, 2024

NYC Crit Club / Canopy Studio
508 W 26th St. #6E
New York, NY

Soft Edge is the fifth and final exhibition of the 2023 Canopy Program year, and represents a celebration of a successful yearlong mentorship for ten artists from around the world. Mentored by Canopy Program Founder & Artist, Catherine Haggarty, the artists of Soft Edge bring together years of experience in a variety of mediums.

Salmah Almansoori is an emerging artist from the United Arab Emirates who blends rich histories of her time and place with a fresh cultural perspective through painting and installation work. Tamera Bedford, from Hong Kong, uses a layered approach to combining materials in her abstract assemblages which reference pattern and history. Alexandrya Eaton uses a bold color palette to address a reclaiming of matrilineal knowledge through her three-dimensional soft sculptural paintings which speak to grief and care. Erin Goodine’s sophisticated drawings and paintings provide an uncanny view into fictional worlds and characters. Gladney Hall creates tiny worlds of meticulous creatures through beautifully handcrafted paintings. Susan Malfa draws on her love of the natural world in her brightly colored drawings and paintings which demonstrate the beauty all around us. Kasey Ott combines saturated color and abstract compositions to create lively and fun imaginary worlds inspired by her role as an educator. In her material practice, Merritt Spangler uses a variety of mediums in minimalist works which speak to pop culture and draw from personal experience. Margaret Thompson’s otherworldly creations weave views of reality with mythology and symbolism. Emily Tironi’s multifaceted collage works address themes of disability through a societal and cultural lens which serve to challenge societal norms and stereotypes in a powerful way. All ten artists are excited to come together to celebrate a year of achievements and kick off NYC Crit Club’s new space.
